Domel, Business unit EC System: Sponsor of Imperial Racing Green Team
16. April 2010
Imperial Racing Green (IRG) is a large undergraduate project, which involves over 100 students from 8 different departments of Imperial College London. The project aims to develop environmentally friendly technologies and to design, make and test zero emission racing vehicles. Energy is one of Imperial College's key research themes and the IRG project provides undergraduates with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with green technologies and their application.

The project is continuously developing and is currently working on three new vehicles; two of which are scheduled in the coming years to compete in the Formula Student competition, which takes place annually at the Silverstone Racetrack. In the past, the team have competed in the Formula Zero championships as the only UK representative against teams from Holland, Belgium, Spain and the USA.

Collaboration with Domel

The Imperial Racing Green team is developing a customised hydrogen fuel cell system to be used on its fifth iteration vehicle, IRG05. Still in its early stages, IRG05 is to be a fuel cell-supercapacitor hybrid, which will race in the Formula Student competition.

During the design of the fuel cell’s cathode subsystem, the team chose Domel components for their low weight and high performance. Upon hearing about the project, Domel became a sponsor of IRG, in a deal in which they supplied the required component free of charge. The IRG project relies heavily on the generosity of its sponsors in order to continue its development of environmentally friendly technologies.
