REMHub: Rare Earth and Magnets Hub for a resilient Europe
As the world pivots towards a greener future, rare earth elements (REEs) and magnets have emerged as essential components in the energy transition. They are crucial for technologies like electric vehicles, wind turbines, and clean hydrogen solutions. However, the EU's dependence on imports for 90% of its REEs highlights a pressing need for local expertise and innovation. With recycling rates for REEs currently below 5%, there is a significant opportunity for growth and development in this area.
Project Overview
The REMHub project is a visionary initiative aimed at developing and piloting cutting-edge technologies for REE exploration, production, recovery, and recycling. Central to this effort is the Re-X concept, which focuses on recycling, reusing, refurbishing, and repurposing end-of-life products. The project seeks to establish robust EU REE value chains and bring these technologies to market through an innovative digital platform.

Partners
REMHub brings together 24 partners from six countries: Slovenia, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Italy, Ireland, each contributing unique expertise to strengthen Europe’s rare earth element (REE) value chain. From research institutions and industry leaders to technology innovators, our partners are critical in developing sustainable REE sourcing, recycling, and innovation solutions.

Domel's Contribution
In the REMHub project, Domel is mainly involved in developing innovative separation technologies supporting Re-X design approach, logistics and supply chain design of rare earths and permanent magnets for recycling. Our company plays crucial role in the design and production of electric motors for Re-X, utilizing digital twinning for REE sustainability. Additionally, Domel supports novel technologies for permanent magnet production and sustainable and energy-independent production of rare earth elements, ensuring traceability for optimal lifecycle optimization.
Enhancing EU REE Supply Security
Through these efforts, the REMHub project aims to bolster the EU's supply security for REEs by fostering innovation and accelerating the market entry of new technologies. By developing local expertise and capabilities, the project reduces reliance on imports and strengthens the EU's position in the global green energy landscape.
Project Details
The REMHub project is a four-year collaborative effort involving 24 partners across six countries, starting in October 2024 and concluding at the end of September 2028. With a total budget of €18 million, including €16 million in EU funding from the Horizon Europe "Resilient Value Chains" program, the project is well-equipped to achieve its ambitious goals.
