50 Years of Vacuum Motors at Domel

26. 11. 2024 | Karmen Nastran

In December 2024, Domel will celebrate a significant milestone: 50 years of partnership with our longest-standing customer, Electrolux (formerly AEG), and 50 years since the development of our first vacuum units. This journey is a testament to innovation, resilience and achievement.

From Prototypes to Millions

In 1974, Domel (then known as Iskra, a manufacturer of electric motors and household appliances) made a major advancement by creating the first two-stage vacuum unit in the 493 family, which established the groundwork for an entire series of vacuum motors. The signing of a cooperation agreement with the German company AEG in 1975 initiated a success story that transformed Domel into a primary supplier of vacuum cleaner motors for AEG, which was later acquired by the Swedish company Electrolux.

The first shipments of vacuum motors commenced in 1976, and by 1981, production had surpassed one million units. This year, we have reached over 160 million units manufactured. In 2024, the largest portion of our sales comes from the 467 family , designed for both dry and wet vacuuming.

Technological Innovations and Achievements

Since the inception of our first units, Domel has continuously developed multiple generations of vacuum units that adapt to market demands and technological progress. The first generation, represented by the 493, 494 and 495 families, achieved over 10 million units sold within 24 years. This was followed in the 1980s by a second generation, which includes the 496, 492, 498 and 491 motor families, all of which remain part of our current product range.

In 1991, we developed the first version of the electronically commutated (EC) vacuum unit for what was then WAP and later became ALTO (now Nilfisk). From the 497 family, a new market segment of sophisticated industrial blowers was developed.

As we entered the new millennium, the third generation of vacuum units was introduced, consisting of the 460, 465, 462, 463, 440, 467 and 464 families. In 2003, Domel emerged as the leading manufacturer of vacuum motors in Europe. The 460 family, designed specifically for dry vacuuming, has been available since 1997, while the versatile 465 family, suitable for both dry and wet applications, followed in 1998. The 462 family, developed for Electrolux in 2000, marked a shift away from skeletal designs. The 463 family, created in collaboration with Philips in 2005, incorporated advanced technologies such as genetic algorithms.

In 2006, Domel expanded into the Chinese market by producing the 440 family in Suzhou, allowing for manufacturing closer to our customers. The 467 family, launched in 2007, set new benchmarks for compactness and efficiency. The 464 family was introduced in 2008, focusing on noise reduction and enhanced efficiency.

This was succeeded by the fourth generation of vacuum units, featuring the 458 for dry vacuuming and the 457 for both wet and dry applications. These units achieved significant advancements, reducing material weight by approximately 25% and increasing efficiency by 5% compared to previous models. Both generations also address the growing demand for sustainable products and establish a foundation for our universal motor program.

Currently, Domel is producing its fifth generation of vacuum units, known for their high efficiency and compact design, in response to the increasing trend towards battery-powered appliances. This includes the 714 and 758 families for dry vacuuming and the 729 and 759  families for both wet and dry vacuuming.

Evolutionary tree of all vacuum motors

Where are Vacuum Motors Used?

Vacuum motors serve a purpose beyond powering vacuum cleaners – they are integral to a wide range of products. Our vacuum units are utilized in various applications , including consumer vacuum cleaners, cordless vacuums, floor cleaners, sweepers, hand dryers, disinfection devices, medical massage beds, professional vacuum solutions, massage baths, paint sprayers and more.

Commitment to Tradition and Partnerships

Our growth is built on long-lasting and successful partnerships with our business partners. For over 30 years, we have collaborated with nine major customers. Our partnership with the German company AEG has enabled Domel to share its expertise and innovations globally, resulting in recognition and trust in our products.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, it’s essential to reflect on our accomplishments while also focusing on the future. We expect significant growth in the coming years, particularly with the latest generation of electronically commutated vacuum motor families, 714, 758 and 759, which are currently being intensively industrialized and marketed.

Domel's newest vacuum units are up to 10 times lighter than the first generation and half the weight of previous models, enhancing user convenience. Their efficiency has improved by over 5%, leading to better performance and lower energy consumption.

The most important features of EC blowers are their reliability and robustness, as they have to perform in demanding industrial conditions. We will continue to develop high-quality solutions and ensure that our EC blowers are able to operate smoothly in a wide range of applications.

We are dedicated to innovations and enhancements that will define the future of vacuum units. Our commitment to quality and reliability remains paramount, enabling us to stay in the premium quality segment. We are a development partner for the most reputable brands in vacuum technology.

Summing Up

Celebrating 50 years of vacuum motors at Domel is not only an anniversary but also a chance to reflect and plan for the future. We are proud of our history and excited to embrace what lies ahead. A heartfelt thankyou to all our business partners who have been integral to this remarkable journey. As we mark this milestone, we eagerly anticipate new innovations and business successes that will shape our lives in the decades to come.
